Welcome to Unit 1 of BlueLink Academy’s 1040 Income Tax Preparation Course. Filing status and dependency determinations are the foundational decisions on every federal tax return. They set the tax brackets, establish standard deduction amounts, and dictate eligibility for valuable family tax credits and deductions throughout the rest of Form 1040.
Filing status is not a minor detail—it is the first decision on every return that shapes the entire tax calculation. A disciplined preparer never assumes filing status or dependency eligibility based on casual client statements, but conducts a thorough inquiry into marital status as of December 31, residency duration, and support tests to build an accurate, audit-proof return.
The five filing statuses (Single, HOH, MFJ, MFS, QSS), marital determination on Dec 31, abandoned spouse rule, and standard deductions.
Qualifying Child 5 tests, Qualifying Relative 3 tests, tie-breaker rules, Form 8332 custodial release, and Form 2120 multiple support.
Always verify filing status and dependent eligibility at the start of the interview. A return built on an incorrect filing status is defective on every subsequent line. Take contemporaneous notes and verify government IDs.
